The Wanted by Robert Crais

REVIEW BY KRIS WILLIAMS
If you like the crime/thriller genre, you'll like this offering by Robert Crais. A #1 New York Times bestselling author, Crais began his career writing for classic crime and police shows like Hill Street Blues, Cagney and Lacey, Miami Vice and LA Law.
This book re-introduces investigator Elvis Cole and his partner Joe Pike. Cole is hired by single mother Devon Connor to find out what Tyson, her 17 year old son, is up to. He has expensive clothes in his closet, an expensive watch, and cash hidden in his room; Devon is concerned Tyson is into drugs. What looks like a standard case on the surface turns into anything but when bodies start to pile up.
Tyson and his new friends, Alex and Amber, are responsible for a number of high-end burglaries. What they don’t realise is they have stolen the wrong thing from the wrong man who has Harvey and Stems – hired killers pretending to be cops – tracking them down to get back his property. They are ruthless and do not hesitate to kill anyone who gets in their way, but they also provide some black comedy relief.
The story moves between Cole and his partner, Harvey and Stems, and LAPD police officers Cassett and Rivera. Cassett and Rivera are under pressure to solve the burglaries but lack leads that will identify them. A murder alerts Cole to the danger that Tyson and Amber are in, but Harvey and Stems always seem to be one step ahead of the police. As the story moves between these points of view, a little more of the story emerges.
Cole soon realises that his is a bigger case than he first thought, with the investigators soon finding themselves going toe-to-toe with a pair of ruthless killers in what’s easily Elvis Cole’s most dangerous case to date.
Thoroughly recommend this as a good read.
