Last Smile in Sunder City : The Fetch Phillips Archives #1 , by Luke Arnold
Planet Books Review:
Long gone is the magic that held the world together. In its place, there is only anger, hate, and fear. Human greed destroyed the source of magic and the world that came after is full of self-loathing for Fetch Phillips. Watching helplessly as the woman he loved died when the magic stopped, Fetch promised to do some good. But the demon drink and self-hate never go well to getting that done. Then, a mysterious disappearance lands on his desk, this private investigator must work hard to navigate a city in turmoil to solve the case that might just have a bit of magic about it.
The Last Smile in Sunder City is a deftly crafted, rich fantasy world with a tapestry of characters. The vast array of magical and non-magical races are carefully thought out. The tension between humans and the people they destroyed is felt in the terse conversations and stand-offs. However, there is also forgiveness and hope. Arnold has written a compelling fantasy novel with overtones of mystery. It’s an easy to read page-turner, full of fleshed-out characters and fun side-tracks.
