You Know You Want This by Kristen Roupenian

REVIEW BY HAYLEY ROHEAD
You Know You Want This is a collection of short stories from Kristen Roupenian, who won fame for her short story ‘Cat Person’ published last year by the New York Times.
This collection of stories is linked by the dark – and, in many cases, somewhat macabre – tone they weave into the audiences’ mind. Most of the tales are explorations of power dynamics across romantic, familial, friendship or professional relationships, often told from the perspective of a woman in the story – who herself is either villainous or victimised.
As a reader and an admirer of dark psyche fiction, I found these stories to be both too much and not enough. Reading more than one or two in a single sitting was overwhelming and difficult to process.
But when I reached the end of the collection, I wanted more. I found it dark, humorous, sad, and happy. Some of the situations were so realistically written they felt more like a friend telling me of their experience than a fictional narrative.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys (reading) the darker side of life in the modern world.
