Merlot has long been a staple variety in the vineyards of Bordeaux, used in blends with Cabernet Sauvignon to add soft, supple fruit to the final wine. More recently, it has made a name for itself as the predominant variety in the "garagiste" wines of Pomerol and St-Emilion in Bordeaux.

Susy Atkins is the wine columnist for Eve and is consultant editor of the award winning Which? Wine Guide. She has written for many national newspapers and magazines and is a regular contributor to BBC Good Food, WINE, and Which? Susy is co-author of Drink! Never Mind the Peanuts which won the Glenfiddich Drink Book of the Year 2002, and is also the author of Girls' Guide to Wine, and How to Choose Wine, one of the first books in the Wine Made Easy series. She appears regularly on UK Food TV.
